Newsletters and spam...
Here a question of NLstart:
I'm maybe going to use the newsletter plugin. By sending e-mails through the newsletter plugin; one of my websites would probably send out some 1500 e-mails out on a regular basis (2 times a month or so). How do others prevent from being blocked as a spammer by their provider?
Who has some experiences and can give some advice....?
Recently Weather.com has start sending emails to the users of the XML feed with weather information stating that they will check on the right handling and presentation of their information. These requirements are specified in the email. As this feed is used in the e107weather plugin, you should meet their requirements:
To comply with the terms of the Agreement, Your Website or Desktop Application must, among other things: - display weather data for no more than three (3) locations at a time; - adhere to the data request rules, usage rules, and refresh rates outlined in Exhibit B of the Agreement; - clearly separate TWCi data from other data within a single visual element; - identify that the weather data comes from TWCi by incorporating The Weather Channel logo containing an embedded link to the www weather.com home page (one of 5 Required Links); - provide four (4) promotional links, selected by TWCi and provided through the Service on each data call, back to www weather.com for additional weather information in close proximity to the TWCi Content as set forth in Exhibit B of the Agreement; and - be free of charge to your end-users.
One other requirement is the frequency with which you collect the data from their site: no more than once per 25 minutes (so specify update frequency on 1800 seconds). Also the call to get the XML feed will sometimes give some problems, for a fix see: [link] . I will update the plugin in the near future to comply with the new requirements.
From Léo I received two links which are very interesting for designing HTML newsletters:
How to code HTML Email Newsletters
The biggest pain is that people use many different software tools to read their email, from desktop software such as Eudora, Outlook, AOL, and LotusNotes to web-based email services such as Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Google Mail. Each of these email software tools can display the same email code in vastly different ways. Even when these tools display an html email properly, readers size the width of their emails from narrow to wide.
This article describes the results of hands-on experiences coding html email newsletters for clients, as well as bits of technical information from the internet: [link]

If you have problems with url_open .....
If your hoster does not allow the use of url_open and you have access to CURL as a part of PHP you can download an update of the weather_act_functions.php file, unzip it and upload it to the server. It is very likely that you can use the plugin afterwards without any problem. Go to here.
You do not need to download this file if you do not have problems currently.

Posted by dman Hi,I've set up a newsletter signup option on my e107 powered site. When users select the option to subscribe- they go to the signup page where they see a table with the options Subscribe Unsubscribe and Archive. This seems redundant and I'd like to shift this table to the bottom of the page and remove the 'Subscribe' link entirely. So that there's the traditional boxes- Your user name and your email. Not (yet) a coder so any how to's appreciated. 02 Nov : 02:14
